An issue recently occurred between me and one of my friends about how the law worked. In particular the issue was about connecting to a neighbor’s internet and whether it was illegal or not to do. I know for a fact that it is illegal but at times it seems logical that you may have to connect to another’s unsecure network, your internet goes out or your wireless access point goes down, whatever the case may be. So the question is whether it is ethical to allow this sort of behavior to be allowed in public. Many things can be done over the internet, buying a car to downloading an illegal copy of a movie, and all of these can even look legit. But everything can be tracked and ISP’s are cracking down on it. For example Comcast has started to actually warn high bandwidth users that they will be cut off from service, not to mention that they can see exactly what you are downloading and can call in the authorities if the problem gets out of hand. By using someone else’s internet you could be jeopardizing their future if what you are using their internet for illegal things. Overall I think we need to warn the general public of the dangers of having unsecure wireless technology and show them how to properly make a secure network. Lots of information can not only be downloaded in your name, but records and accounts can also be stolen if the right people are messing with your connection.
